Alexander Mertens is a known in Ukraine expert and consultant in the areas of financial markets, corporate finance, investment, valuation and private equity with more than ten years of consulting experience. Private equity business in Ukraine is to become a promising direction of investments. There is at least five reasons to consider such an opportunity:

continuous growth of the economy especially in the "new" industries and businesses appeared in 90s which are oriented not only toward growing domestic demand but also export markets,
substantial growth of households' income which appears to continue in subsequent years,
"entrepreneurial" nature of new businesses and readiness to consider venture capital as a tool of increasing capital base for future growth,
increasing involvement into global economy which allows to utilize existing competitive advantages,
gradually improving institutional environment.

Although still some problems persist, namely:

weak domestic PE/VC industry mainly due to small investment base,
not supporting legal environment including corporate governance regulations and practices,
underdeveloped domestic capital market constraining possibilities for exit,
narrow set of instruments to structure the deal,
absence of well developed system of seed investment financed by government and/or corporations.

But all these existing difficulties seem to be rapidly improving, creating enormous profitable opportunities for PE/VC business.
Insight to the reality of PE business in Ukraine as well as lessons learned from performed projects are going to be analysed during the presentation.
