  20. Rubberized fabric for protection against radiation
    (TU U 25.1-31655768-001-2005)
    Rubberized materials with radiation-protective properties can be used for manufacturing of personal/collective protective equipment/means during performance of installation and other operations on the territory of SHELTER facility.
    The material provides protection from:
    • Direct contamination from radioactive wastes;
    • Radioactive α- and β-emission Æ entirely;
    • Highly penetrative -X and γ-emission Æ partly;
    • Chemically and bioactive substances.
    Clothes from rubber protective material are airtight, used as additional PPE and are worn over usual overalls and special footwear when are performed repairing, installation and decontamination operations.
    Collective protection clothing made of rubberized radiation-protective fabric are very elastic and have small weight compared to items made of lead-containing materials.
    Radiation-protective properties of rubber material for PPE:
    Density, g/cm3 Linear attenuation coefficient, cm-1
    241Am 137Cs 60Co
    60 keV 661 keV 1,210 keV

    The thickness of one layer of radiation-protective rubberized fabric is 0.8 mm. Plate is manufactured in roll by width 900-1200 mm.
    Rubberized fabric for protection against radiation is also used for manufacturing collective protective equipment/means: elastic screens, screens and shields. For instance, radiation-protective shield of 0.5 m2 and 20 mm thick weights 20 kg and has the following radiation-protective properties:
    Atteniation decrease on energy of 137Cs (661) Æ 1.622

    Materials based on PVCh (polyvinylchloride) are one of the most widely used materials for protection against radiation. They are used for manufacturing of personal protective equipment/means and clothing (suits, coveralls, gowns, cover-sluts, jackets, raincoats, gloves etc.), as well as collective protective means (elastic folding screens, shields, screens etc.). The distinguishing feature of this material developed by Yuzhmash based on PVCh is its use as filler of special modifying agent based on superdispersed medium. It allows support increased radiation-protective properties of material as compared to its initial condition.
    Clothing made of PVCh is airtight, used as additional PPE and is worn over usual overalls and special footwear when are performed repairing, installation and decontamination operations at nuclear power plants.
    The thickness of one layer of PVCh radiation-protective material is 0.4 mm.
    Hard-to-burn products delivery is possible.
  22. Radiation-protective glass-fiber plastic
    Radiation-protective fiberglass plastic is intended for manufacturing of hard screens, shields, elements of external and internal coatings, quick-to-assemble building structures (passages, temporary facilities, walls).
    The history of composite materials application at State Enterprise "Production Association Yuzhny Machine-Building Plant named after A. M. Makarov" in rocket production has proved high mechanical strength and chemical resistance with the weight of these materials being relatively small.
    Research conducted at Kharkov Physical-Technical Institute has shown that radiation resistance of the composite material will remain for not less than 300 years.
    Items manufactured of composite radiation-protective glass fiber plastic are characterized by the following properties:
    Radiation-protective properties
    Linear attenuation coefficient on the energy 137Cs (662 keV), cm-1 0.287
