Modern political palette of UkrainePolitical parties in Ukraine promote the formation and expression of the political will of the country’s citizens, as well as facilitate participation in the election process. Only citizens of Ukraine can become members of political parties. According to information from the Ministry of Justice, as of November 25, 2005, 126 political parties were registered in Ukraine. Changes to the Constitution of Ukraine approved in 2004 gave a strong impetus to the party system development in Ukraine. They envisaged that elections to the Verkhovna Rada, the Parliament of Ukraine, should be conducted on a proportionate system, that is, according to party lists. Previously, a mixed elective system was applied in Ukraine on the basis of party lists and majority constituencies.
