Modern economic POTENTIAL OF UKRAINE

Ore mining industry

Iron ore raw stock in Ukraine is mostly represented by four iron ore districts: the Krivoy Rog iron ore basin (Krivbass); the Kremenchug iron ore basin; the Belozerskiy iron ore basin; and the Kerch iron ore basin.

The flux raw base includes two regions – Donetsk and Crimea, and the manganese base is mostly located in the Nikopol basin.

Intensive development of ore mining enterprises took place in the 1950-60s. In 1963, the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic contributed 54.6% to gross production of iron ore products in the USSR, and in early 1970s it provided 14% of world output. The high was reached in 1978 – 126.4 mn tons of iron ore products.

In the following years, because of well-known reasons, production kept falling, with the lowest of 48.0 mn tons seen in 1999.

Because of a number of organizational and technical measures and state support, the performance of ore mining enterprises stabilized since 1999 and is now experiencing annual rises in commercial production.

In 2005, mining enterprises produced: 68.6 mn tons of iron ore and concentrate (56.1 mn tons by Krivbass), including: non-sintered iron ore – 15.6 mn tons (11.4 mn tons); concentrate – 53.0 mn tons (44.7 mn tons); iron ore sinter – 10.8 mn tons (100%); iron ore pellets – 17.5 mn tons (9.7 mn tons); metallurgical limestone – 15.3 mn tons; and raw dolomite – 1.1 mn tons.

The 2006 marks 125 years since the start of exploration at the Krivoy Rog iron ore basin – one of the largest deposits in Europe.

As of January 1, 2005, the balance reserves of iron ore stock by Ukrainian enterprises are as follows (data of enterprises): 1,394.1 mn tons – natural rich ores, including 684.0 mn tons in project outlines; 11,711.9 mn tons – magnesite quartzites (6,473.7 mn tons); 1,027.8 mn tons – oxide magnesite quartzites (753.4 mn tons). Besides, the balance of underground enterprises includes 3,809.9 mn tons of magnesite quartzites.
